My Favorite 2WIN! Moment

My final class in Moscow included a woman who seemed to purposely avoid any and all Demo2WIN! techniques.  She began with a black and white slide with lots of small writing on it.  She did not visually support in any way.  She talked constantly about features and not one word about benefits.  And her close was “There you have it- our Financial software”.

When she completed her presentation I asked her “ Do you realize that you did not use one Demo2WIN! technique?” She answered “Yes- I purposely did not use any of your stuff because I wanted people to see that you can give a great presentation without using any tricks!”   I let that sink in for a moment (while I heard the big shout of “Fish On!” in my head) and then someone in the class said “But it was AWFUL!”  Everyone laughed…and agreed.

I thanked her for giving us a chance to analyze something so specifically NON-Demo2WIN! and suggested we use it as a source of discussion.   Then we began going through the presentation and the class ended up coming up with some great ideas on how take this “standard” feature-focused, “boring” demo and turn it into a demo with impact.  It was such fun to see them applying the concepts so openly!  And I did not have to say a word.  Together we turned this into a super learning experience and these students reinforced for themselves how much better demos can be by incorporating these “tricks”.
